Reef Check California is a non-profit organization whose mission it is to empower local communities to improve the health of their reefs. The way they do this is by training experienced scuba divers to become citizen scientists that utilize a standardized underwater monitoring protocol to collect data for evaluating reefs. The data collected is available to any interested party and is provided to marine managers, policy makers, and stakeholders to ensure that well-informed decisions are being made with respect to coastal resources. Reef Check volunteers include students, teachers, commercial and recreational fishermen, conservationists… people from all walks of life with a common desire: the long term health and sustainability of our coastal ecosystems. Trainees learn to identify 73 indicator organisms including fishes, invertebrates, seaweeds, and selected invasive species as well as learn to characterize seafloor habitat. They then take park in planned surveys conducted along the entire coast of CA. Becoming a Reef Check volunteer is great way to learn about the marine environments that we enjoy so much as well as play a direct role in marine management and conservation. Trainings are two weekends long- a weekend of classroom and pool work followed by a weekend of boat diving and field exercises.
